Marquis Who’s Who Honors Elementary Education Expert Joan Ava Gillman

A Teacher's Education
Laying the foundation for her professional career, Ms. Gillman's dedication to helping children reach their full potential inspired her to pursue higher education. She studied at Felician College, now Felician University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in education, summa cum laude, in 1980. Furthering her education pursuits, Ms. Gillman obtained a Master of Arts in education from the New York University School of Education, Health, Nursing and Arts Professions (SEHNAP), now called the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, in 1982.

After completing her master's degree, Ms. Gillman's career began as a fifth-grade classroom teacher at St. Angela Merici School. The following year, she relocated to Joytown Kent Elementary School in the Bronx to teach fourth and fifth-grade students. As a language arts and social studies teacher, Ms. Gillman spent two years at the Bede School in Englewood, New Jersey. In 1986, she joined the staff of the Professional Children's School in New York City, where she remained for the next two decades and taught all academic subjects for fourth and fifth grade, as well as sixth-grade mathematics and science. Additionally, she served as a teacher advisor for the Middle School Council.

Other teaching positions Ms. Gillman has held include classroom positions at Anna C. Scott Elementary School, Yeshivat Noam and the Calhoun School.

Ms. Gillman has distinguished herself through her role at The Browning School, a college preparatory school for boys in New York City, where she was a science teacher for second, fifth and sixth grade from 2018 to 2019. She has been a science teacher at The Browning School for second, fourth and sixth grade since 2019.

Finding great satisfaction working with middle school-aged youth, Ms. Gillman has also obtained additional endorsements in K-12 education for students with hearing impairments. She has been a certified educator through National Geographic, specializing in science and mathematics, since 2019.

An Educator's Journey
Ms. Gillman has always considered teaching a profound calling, but her illustrious career also highlights her expertise in the field of education. She has contributed to numerous articles in professional journals and publications, such as Science and Children, published through the National Science Teaching Association. This publication included her article "Straw Rockets are Out of This World," which was later selected for publication in a book, "Bringing STEM to the Elementary Classroom."

Beyond time in the classroom and researching, Ms. Gillman shares her knowledge at national conferences for various professional organizations, including the Science Council of New York City, the National Science Teaching Association and the Science Teachers Association of New York State, which appointed her as a subject area representative for its elementary section for New York City in 2016. Previously, Ms. Gillman was recruited as an ambassador for NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission, part of NASA's Mars programs for teachers.

Ms. Gillman's accomplishments have also earned her various awards. In 2017, she was selected by the Calhoun School to receive the Urhy Thompson Award. Ms. Gillman is also a recipient of the Young Teachers Incentive Award from the Professional Children's School. She was selected for Cornell University's East Asian International Studies program grant for a curriculum she developed in 2011, titled "The Great Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami," further solidifying her contributions to her field.

In addition to her professional work, Ms. Gillman has a musical background and ballet experience. She plays violin with multiple renowned orchestras, including the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the North Jersey Symphony Orchestra and The August Symphony Orchestra. She attributes her success to her dedication to being a lifelong learner and her motivation to inspire her students to do the same.
