Marshall B. Ketchum University Launches Doctor of Medical Science Program

New Online Program Empowers PAs to Lead, Educate and Innovate Across Clinical, Administrative and Academic Settings

Marshall B. Ketchum University (MBKU) is proud to announce the launch of its new Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program, with its first class beginning in Fall 2025. Tailored exclusively for physician assistants (PAs), this 100% online, asynchronous post-professional program empowers graduates to take on advanced leadership, education and clinical roles across the evolving healthcare landscape.

The DMSc program builds on the longstanding success and national influence of MBKU’s School of Physician Assistant Studies, known for producing skilled professionals who lead across diverse healthcare fields. As PA roles continue to expand, this advanced degree serves as a natural extension of MBKU’s commitment to the profession—offering flexible, online learning designed for both working professionals and recent graduates. The program not only supports career advancement but also helps address national shortages in faculty and healthcare leadership at a time when demand is rising and fewer than 3% of PAs hold a doctorate.

“The DMSc is more than a degree – it’s a launchpad, offering a flexible yet rigorous option for PAs seeking to advance in administration, academia or advanced practice,” says Robert E. McKenna, DMSc, MPH, PA-C, an expert in PA education, biopharmaceutical medical affairs and health policy, who is leading the program to help today’s PAs evolve with the profession. “Whether you’re entering academia or have professional goals in addition to or beyond your clinical role, this program is designed to help you lead with confidence and purpose.”

The program offers three distinct academic tracks aligned with a PA’s career stage and professional aspirations:

  • Advanced Professional Practice: A two-quarter bridge pathway for PAs who have graduated within the past two years, designed to enhance organizational expertise and accelerate leadership development.
  • Healthcare Administration & Leadership: A four-quarter program ideal for experienced PAs pursuing strategic, operational and or team management roles.
  • PA Education: A four-quarter track preparing physician assistants to teach in one of the 300+ PA programs nationwide, helping meet the growing demand for doctorally trained faculty.

Each pathway follows MBKU’s evidence-based curriculum, emphasizing leadership, interprofessional collaboration and real-world application. With small cohort sizes and personalized mentorship, students are equipped to navigate complex healthcare systems, shape clinical education and influence health policy.

“At Marshall B. Ketchum University, we are continually evolving according to the needs of the healthcare industry,” stated Dr. Julie A. Schornack, president of MBKU. “By establishing the Doctor of Medical Science program, we are not only meeting the demands of today’s healthcare landscape, but we are expanding opportunities for PAs to lead, educate and shape the future of care.”
